Period Myths You Should Stop Believin

Let’s talk about it. For something that happens to half the world’s population, there’s still so much confusion, stigma, and misinformation around periods. Whether it’s something you heard in school or from a friend, some common period myths can do more harm than good.
It’s time to clear the air and replace myths with facts. Here are some of the most common period myths you can stop believing today.
1. “You shouldn’t exercise during your period.”
Not true. Movement can actually help. Gentle workouts like yoga, stretching, or walking can ease cramps and lift your mood. Even if you're not feeling 100%, a little movement can go a long way in making you feel better.
That said, always listen to your body. If rest is what you need, take it. But don’t feel like you have to stay curled up all day unless you want to.
2. “Periods are dirty.”
There is nothing dirty or impure about menstruation. It’s a natural biological process that means your body is doing what it’s supposed to. Unfortunately, in many cultures, this myth still exists and can make people feel ashamed about their period.
At Enya, we believe in breaking the taboo and promoting open, healthy conversations about periods. It’s time we stop associating periods with shame or secrecy.
3. “You can’t get pregnant during your period.”
While it's less likely, it’s not impossible. Sperm can live inside the body for up to 5 days. If you have a shorter cycle, ovulation can happen soon after your period ends, making it possible to get pregnant during or right after menstruation.
So if you're relying on your period as a form of birth control, you might want to rethink that strategy.
4. “Only teens get irregular periods.”
Irregular periods can happen at any age. While it's common for cycles to be a bit unpredictable in the early years, stress, lifestyle changes, hormonal shifts, or health conditions can cause irregularities in your twenties, thirties, or beyond.
If your period suddenly changes in flow, frequency, or symptoms, it's a good idea to track it and consult a healthcare professional.
5. “Pads and tampons are your only options.”
This used to be true, but not anymore. Period care has come a long way. Today, you can choose from organic pads (like Enya’s), reusable cloth pads, menstrual cups, period panties, and even heating patches for cramps.
Choosing the right product is personal. What matters most is that you feel comfortable, safe, and supported during your cycle.
